Values & Significance

The Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve contributes to tangible and intangible benefits to the mankind, which have both local and global significance. It has potential values, in the shape of a beautiful treasure house of nature's gene pool, which must be protected as a part of our national heritage. Tadoba-Andhari is significant for preservation and perpetuation of, the following, values and functions as a rich and diverse natural eco-system, which form the core of the life support processes in this area.


Environmental Values

Reserve areas due to its dense green cover act as major carbon sink sequestering large quantities of carbon and other pollutants. This way it acts as the “Green Lungs” for the surrounding human settlements and Chandrapur city is particular and helps in maintaining the environmental balance and ecological stability in the area.


Ecological Values

Bio-geograhic location of the Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve is a tree representative of the Southern tropical Dry Deciduous Forest of the Central Highlands in the Decccan Peninsula. It inhabitant in itself the rich biodiversity with plenty of floral and faunal representative of the area and conservation of this area ensures the sustainability of ecological proceses and biodiversity, having global significance. The tree clad forests, rolling grasslands habituated with spotted dears afford wonderful sights. To ensure site specific norms on buildings and infrastructures in areas inside and close to tigers reserve, Keeping in view the corridor value and ecological aesthetics.


Conservation values

Forest areas of Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve constitute a part of vast unfragmented expanse of forest tract in this region encompassing rich forest and wildlife tracts in Central India. It provides an ideal un-fragmented habitat for the faunal species thriving in this part and forms a significant part of Maharashtra. This contiguity of habitat facilitates free and unobstructed movement of wild animals like the Gaurs for the favorable habitat.


Floral and Faunal Value

Tadoba Flora: The Tadoba Tiger Reserve, Chaprala and Bhamragath are supports a wide variety of flora. The floristic composition of vegetation of Tadoba Tiger Reserve comprises of different species of trees, shrubs, herbs and grasses constituting different layers of habitat suitable for different faunal species. The prominent trees species are Teak, and its associates, namely Ain, Dhaoda, Haldu, Kalam, Lendia, Garari, Salai, Mowai, Kulu, Tendu, Moha, Hirda, Behada, Achar, Amaltas, Anjan, Apta, Aola, Arjun, Bad, Bel, Bamboo, etc. and host of other species of wildlife and medicinal significance.

Tadoba Fauna: The rich habitat of Tadoba Tiger Reserve, Chaprala and Bhamragath are favors rich and abundant population of wild animals. Tadoba serves as the prime habitat of Indian tiger and Panthers, which are the key species in these areas along with other species of cat family. The mammalian population comprises of mainly animals species like Sambhar, Chital, Barking Deer, Nilgai, Gaur, Wildboar, Chausingha, Sloth bear, Wilddog, Langurs, Rhesus monkey, Mouse Deer, Black Naped hare, Jackal Fox, Hyena, Porcupine, Flying squirrel, etc as well as wide variety of aquatic life, amphibians, reptiles and avi-fauna.


Watershed & Catchment Value

Tadoba lake sustains the Marsh Crocodile, which were once common all over Maharashtra. Black plum trees grow in the riparian habitat around the lake. The lifeline of the park are the Andhari River, Erai Dam, Kolsa Lake, Junoria Lake, Naleshwar dam and the Tadoba Lake.
The network of root system of the vegetation and geological formations functions as a sponge for conservation of moisture and to restrict the slit deposition in these water bodies and reservoirs. Park areas play a vital role in maintaining the longevity and health of these reservoirs. Reverse area play a vital role in maintaining the life expectancy and health of these reservoirs.


Educational & Recreational Value

Due to proximity of the Reserve area to the Chandrapur City, it provides an excellent opportunity to a large number of visitors to seek solace from the hustle -bustle of the city life into the tranquility of the deep woods. It has tremendous recreational values in its hilly and undulating terrain with gentle slopes; and forests rich with activities of nature. The Education and awareness about the nature and bio-diversity conservation is being promoted through nature interpretation and eco-tourism. Every year over 100,000 visitors, including schoolchildren and their teachers, college and university students visit this Reserve.


Cultural Values

The Tiger Reserve and adjoining areas form a part of the Gondwana lands in Central India. Reserve areas inhabit villages in its vicinity having Gond population exhibiting and perpetuating Gond Culture, values and way of life. There are 79 villages in the buffer area with total population of 66298 one of the main consideration in buffer area is to create employment opportunities for local villagers so that they actively participate in conservation of forest and wildlife.
