Welcome to Chaprala Wildlife Sanctuary

Chaprala Wildlife Sanctuary derives its name from local village Chaprala. It covers 134.83 Sq. Km. area. Its northern, eastern and southern borders lie adjacent to Pedigundam range of Allapalli forest division, whereas western border is formed by the perennial Pranhita rivier. Accross the river is Andrapradesh. Sanctuary is located partly in Mulchera Tahasil and 0partly in Chamorshi Tahasil of Gadchiroli District.

Administration and management of this area is under supervision and control of the Chief Conservator of Forest and Field Director Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve head quarter at Chandrapur.

Importance of Santuary

Rich floral diversity:

As per Champion and Seth classification, the forest type found is 5A-C1-1B-southern tropical dry deciduous forest with teak as its dominant species. Vegetation diversity is quite reach as over 245 species (69 tree,15 shrub, 73 herb, 47 grass and 41 climber species) have been identified. Edge and ecotone effects too are quite conspicuous. Floristically these features make the Sanctuary significant.

Faunal Value:

The area historically held the status of a shooting block, as big games like those that tiger and leopard where found. Now they are rarely seen along the fringe of the sanctuary. Abundance of herbivores like Sambhar, Chital, blackbuck, Blue bull continue to provide broad prey base. Wild dogs, wild boars Languor's and mongoose are also common in the area. Reach avian fauna especially of aquatic and migratory types also frequent in sanctuary.

Water Bodies and Aquatic Life

Sanctuary is located on the bank of Confluence of Wardha and Wainganga rivers. During the monsoons, river water swells and enters sanctuary mainly through the numerous nallahs. Along with backwater variety of fish, prawns and turtles also enters the sanctuary. The sanctuary has conspicuous riparian ecosystem in which population of fish, prawns and turtles thrive. They also support rich aquatic life and avi-fauna and sites of natural beauty and tranquility.
